PUBG Passes 2 Million Concurrent Players on Steam

Nothing can stop the train that is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The Battle Royale style online shooter from Bluehole keeps rushing through milestones and impressing the gaming community worldwide. This time, PUBG has actually been this first to achieve over 2 million concurrent players on Steam, according to the latest data from SteamDB.

PUBG peaked at 2,041,534 concurrent players yesterday, putting the early access game even further ahead of Valve originals Dota 2 and CS:GO. Free-to-play Dota 2 was dethroned by PUBG as Steam’s top game in late August of this year, shortly before the shooter broke Twitch’s player count record.

The game’s creator, Brenden “PlayerUnknown” Greene, has previously said he thinks PUBG could reach 100 million concurrents, which is certainly feasible with its enormous popularity and success. Thanks to a deal with Microsoft, Battlegrounds will be able to reach even more players when it comes to Xbox One consoles. And don’t worry PlayStationers, Bluehole is thinking about bringing the title to PS4 as well.

PUBG‘s appeal is already being replicated by other games, most notably Fortnite‘s free-to-play Battle Royale mode, which released last month for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Mac. The mode is clearly based on Greene’s creation in more ways than one, and players have responded positively, bringing Fortnite to 10 million players. We’ll likely see a surge in Battle Royale style games and modes in the coming year thanks to PUBG‘s popularity. Hold onto your butts.

The success of PUBG will not stop here, I’m certain. We’ll keep you updated as it breaks more records and hopefully gets an actual console release date.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now on Steam Early Access.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
