A new game mode is coming in to spice things up for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Much like Battle Royale competitor Fortnite, PUBG is adding an Event Mode with limited-time custom games with brand new play styles and special items.
PUBG Corp. announced Event Mode in a Steam community post yesterday, saying the team “will be trying new things and experimenting with different game parameters.” In Event Mode matches, “players will be able have Battle Royale experiences otherwise not available in the public matches.” So instead of standard Solos, Duos, and Squads where the rule remain the same, Event Mode will mix the rules up and add in new gameplay elements.
The first Event Mode will be a simple eight-person squad match. Future iterations of Event Mode will be more complex, but the developers need to keep it maintainable to test the system first. Baby steps. The eight-person squad games will also offer players double the rifle spawns.
Anyone with a copy of PUBG on any console can try out Event Mode now by changing the Match type to “Event” instead of “Classic” on the home screen. For now, Event matches will be playable only in third-person point-of-view on the original Erangel map to, again, keep it maintainable for testing.
As for future Event Modes, PUBG Corp. teased the exciting things ahead with an image of what appears to be a flare gun. Players are already wondering what new time of gameplay parameters will be introduced to make use of the new weapon. But mostly players are asking for the anti-cheat system to be put back in place. Whatcha gonna do?
