I was a bit late to the virtual reality party.  Having never played an Oculus Rift or an HTC Vive, I consider myself a newcomer to the whole thing.  Thanks to my incredibly generous friend Xak (seriously, props to him), I have been able to enjoy the Playstation VR and its wide array of games for the past month.  When I first got my hands on the tech, I had a few physical games to play, but really wanted to see what the PSVR library had to offer.  It was then that I realized the high price point on these relatively short experiences, and did some digging.

Top 6 Games to Own on PSVR

While I tried to figure out what I wanted to purchase, I visited plenty of sites in search of a solid answer.  I took input from some folks over at Reddit, visited a few other “top X” lists, and generally got an idea of the quality of each experience.  Then, despite my better judgement, I spent a handful of bucks on some games and jumped in.

I spent quite a lot of time in the virtual worlds of the Playstation VR, and while I’m not a changed man, I’m definitely more knowledgeable about the subject.  If you’re curious on my opinions concerning the value of the PSVR, you can check out our YouTube video on it at the bottom of this article.  For now, here’s my picks for the best content PSVR has to offer.  In no particular order, here’s the best games on PSVR right now.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

If you’ve never played the original Until Dawn on PS4, fret not.  This on-rails shooter experience is great whether or not you’re a fan of the original.  Taking place in a run down amusement park, you hop into a roller coaster car and make your way through a healthy amount of spooky content.  Whether you’re afraid of spiders, ghosts, clowns, or anything really, Until Dawn: A Rush of Blood will make you jump.  Additionally, it’s one of the most immersive and enjoyable games on PSVR and one of the best rail shooters I’ve played since the golden days of arcades.  Even better, it’s a game you can pick up for under $20.

Batman: Arkham VR

Few games have the visual clarity and amount of content that Batman: Arkham VR does.  Both great to look at and an absolute trip to play, it’s one of PSVR’s best.  You’ll mostly hop around and investigate your surroundings, occasionally throwing a batarang or two.  However, Batman: Arkham VR provides an insanely immersive atmosphere and a good variety of environments and puzzles.

Polybius

Even if you don’t own a PSVR, Polybius is one of the most insane games in recent memory.  Containing 3 different flashing light warnings, I cannot understate how visually intense it is.  In play, you control a space ship and weave it through brightly colored obstacles, all while shooting a steady stream of bullets.  It might sound basic, but in execution, it’s definitely something to behold.  It’s weird, colorful, fast, and honestly overwhelming.  All those factors make for an unforgettable psychedelic experience.

Job Simulator

If you’ve never heard of Job Simulator, you’re probably incredibly new to VR.  In that case, thanks for checking out my article first!  Undeniably one of the best VR experiences on every device, Job Simulator takes you through the daily life of several workplaces.  With hilarious writing, interesting and fantastic interaction, and an overall cheery vibe, Job Simulator is a must-have.  It’s the defacto “show your friend VR” game, and with good reason.  Whether you’re in an office, a mechanic shop, a restaurant, or a convenience store, Job Simulator makes even the most mundane tasks ridiculously enjoyable.

Psychonauts: Rhombus of Ruin

Virtual reality is great when you truly feel like you’re in the game.  While some games are simply more fun than immersive, Psychonauts: Rhombus of Ruin provides both puzzling entertainment and gripping visuals.  If you’ve never heard of the god-like excellence of Psychonauts, I won’t blame you.  The Double Fine developed game was a cult hit in the late 2000’s, and Rhombus of Ruin is our first return to the the world.  Dealing with all things psychic and psychedelic, Rhombus of Ruin is a fulfilling adventure that plays with your perception.

I Expect You to Die

Similar in play style to Job Simulator, I Expect You to Die puts you in the head of a super secretive spy.  Resembling the most outrageous sides of film properties like 007 and Mission Impossible, the game is a great mix of silly spy fun and heart racing puzzles.  Defusing a bomb (see above picture), escaping a sinking life pod, and imitating a window washer are just some of the scenarios you’ll encounter.  While there’s only a few stages to play through, there’s a great variety of ways to solve the puzzles.  Additionally, the game beckons to be speed ran and toyed with.  It’s one of my favorite experiences, and definitely of the most memorable on PSVR.
