A Pokémon TCG App Game May be Coming to Mobile

In addition to a rumored Zelda app game, recent reports indicate a digital Pokémon trading card game is coming to smartphones.

The Wall Street Journal claims Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are working on a mobile app game based on the famous Pokémon trading card game (TCG). Many kids grew up playing this competitive card game, and now it’s time to bring it to a new generation on their preferred platform: their phones.

This report comes from “two people familiar with the matter,” though no specific sources were given. To no one’s surprise, a Pokémon Company spokesperson declined to comment on the rumor.

Pokémon TCG Online has already released on Windows and Mac OS X, as well as iPad and Android tablet devices. It initially launched in 2011 but has never seen a mobile release.

There is no confirmation the app game will be Pokémon TCG Online in its same form, but it’s likely. The existing digital TCG game follows the same rules as the original game, and players don’t need to purchase any physical cards or accessories for any part of Pokémon TCG Online. There are multiple methods players use to obtain new cards and other rewards throughout the game.

Similar to Nintendo’s app game Super Mario Run, Pokémon TCG Online requires an internet connection to be played. This requirement makes sense for the latter, as players are competing with others online, though there is a mode for playing against a computer for practice.
