PlayStation VR’s Price Drops, Now Comes With Required Camera

Sony is making some changes to the way PlayStation VR is sold. The virtual reality hardware is officially seeing a price cut starting on September 1st, Sony announced today. It will now be sold exclusively bundled with the required PlayStation Camera for for $399 in the U.S. or $499 in Canada.

Sony launched PlayStation VR last year with a $399 price point. While the PSVR headset was sold on its own, the PlayStation Camera was still needed to actually use the hardware. Now, the new “core PSVR bundle” will come with the camera for no extra charge, which means an effective price drop of roughly $60 — the price of buying the camera separately.

Additionally, the existing bundle — which includes the PSVR headset, PS Camera, two PlayStation Move motion controllers, and a copy of PlayStation VR Worlds — will be available at a new lower price of $449 in the U.S. / $579 in Canada. The motion controllers are technically optional, but they do enhance the experience for several games.

According to the announcement post, these bundles will “start arriving at retailers on September 1st,” which indicates they might take a couple days to actually appear in your local stores. Sony also noted that the hard-to-find Farpoint bundle, which includes a copy of the first-person VR shooter and the PSVR Aim controller, is now back in stock.

If you’re using this opportunity to snag the virtual reality hardware for the first time and are wondering what games to try out, we’ve got you covered. Upcoming PSVR titles include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Sparc, and The Inpatient.

Sony also just announced that the latest PS4 system software update will include some enhancements for virtual reality, such as 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound in Cinematic Mode. You can use PSVR with both a PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
