PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has sold 5 million copies, passed GTA 5’s player count

Online battle royale third-person shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is continuing down its path of roaring success with 5 million copies sold and more concurrent players than Grand Theft Auto V. Impressed yet?

Although developer Bluehole hasn’t made the official announcement, Steam Spy data shows about 5.1 million people now own PlayerUnknown’s BattlegroundsThat’s big news, especially considering the game is still in Steam’s Early Access, where it will stay until Q4 2017. So a full release could come anywhere between October 1st and December 31st.

The game also recently surpassed Grand Theft Auto V to take the spot as the fourth most-played game on Steam, according to Steam Charts, which pulls public data from the Steam API. Still ranked higher are Fallout 4Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Dota 2 with the top spot.

With a thriving online community, GTA V has been locked into Steam’s top five for years, and Battlegrounds has passed it up in just 4 months. With that kind of velocity, who knows where this last-person-standing shooter will go from here.

Well, devs happen to have lots of ideas for where Battlegrounds will go. They’ve been doling out patches regularly and listening to player feedback on desired fixes and new content. Past updates have brought bug fixes, more dynamic sound, improved visuals, and a better UI.

As for future updates, two new maps are in the works, as well as jumping physics, detailed character customization, and first-person mode.

If you want to check out more of Battlegrounds, there is never a shortage of players streaming it on Twitch, or you could look through the game’s “Mostly Positive” 27k+ reviews on Steam.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available for $30 through Steam Early Access, and console ports are on the way.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
