Painted over NES Screenshots look beautiful and match childhood memories

Reddit user andres1984 is giving us the NES HD remasters we always wanted, albeit one screenshot at a time. Like the Unreal engine mockups of classic gaming scenes, our childhood memories often look much better than the games ever did on screen. Andres1984 presents that idealized image using photoshop.

When games had primitive graphics, much was filled in with our imagination. The light streaming through the jungle in Contra is a classic example of the little details that make an environment feel alive. The water crashing into the rockface while reflecting the jungle foliage is also a great touch.

The light of camera flash in Punch-Out is also an eye-catching addition, lending a dreamy feel to the visual elements outside of the central focus (most pretensious thing I’ll write today I promise).

Here are some more from andres1984, who smartly capitalized on the Reddit popularity of these posts by commenting a link to their e-commerce site for ‘prints, mugs, and more’ as much as possible.

This Super Metroid piece was done by a different artist, but fits our theme. There’s a speedart youtube video of how it was done below.

Let’s keep the retro porn going

Reddit user dolphin_menace posted this pic with the header “I wish clear replacement shells like this were more available”.

It’s fascinating to peel back the exterior and peer into the guts of what made this mini-miracles of tech and entertainment work. I was surprised at how little was inside the SNES console, but I love the way it looks with a nice chunk of negative space (less pretentious? ) in between the controller port and game slot. The SNES is so nice to look at I had to investigate if that’s the original design or if whomever encased it here cleaned it up.

Judging from the power and reset buttons, I’d bet the clear beauty is the SNS-101. Although I couldn’t see any shots of the SNS-101’s insides, the original SNES had a much more crowded interior than the clear-case example above.

The SNS-101 was a compact redesign of the SNES, released in 1997 (so the SNES Mini wasn’t the first!). It ditched the eject button and expansion port for Satellaview and the never-marketed Playtation CD-addon.

If you’re in the market for one of these beauties, beware of the counterfeits that can be difficult to differentiate. The major tell appears to be Phillips head screws instead of Nintendo’s own brand (wikipedia).

Well, that was a fun trek down nostalgia lane, but for some reason I want a cigarette? (in clear packaging?).

Post any console porn you have lying around in the comments below. But please don’t take the word ‘porn’ literally, we’re a family site you know.

Mathew is a huge fan of Space, Strategy, and Shadowrun (Genesis version is #1). When it comes to games and films, he’d much rather experience a 10/10 classic from yesteryear than a 6/10 modern blandfest. He does feel we’re living in a gaming golden age with the power of indie developers at an all-time high, but wishes AAA publishers would take more risks. Mat believes it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings the other way and new ideas take their rightful place above reboots.
