Nintendo is Shutting Down Mittomo This May

Miitomo was Nintendo’s first ever mobile app game, and it will soon be meeting its end. Nintendo announced the shut down of the game on its official Japanese website today, giving Miitomo an expiration date of May 9th.

Mittomo coins, the game’s in-app currency, will no longer be sold as of today, while the rest of the game will be fully available until May 9th. You’ll still be able to use the app and receive Miitomo coins through login bonuses until then, and Nintendo is planning to issue refunds to players for any purchased Miitomo coins that went unused.

Miitomo allows players create their own custom Miis to dress up and interact with others. The app game initially launched on iOS and Android devices in March of 2016. It was a bit of a craze at first, but after the internet got about all the memes it could out of the game, the hype simmered down. Still, Miitomo managed to hit over 10 million downloads in its time on the app store, which isn’t something to go without noting.

Since Miitomo, Nintendo has released more app games such as Super Mario RunFire Emblem Heroes, and, most recently, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. With the arrival of some of its more prominent franchises to the mobile gaming market, it makes sense that Nintendo would want to use more of its servers for them and less for nearly forgotten titles.

So if you’re still partying with your pals in Miitomo, you’ll want to make the most out of the next few months. Make the most of those coins and game tickets as well, or hold onto any coins your purchased to get a few dollars back from the big N. Remember that you can connect with your friends from Miitomo on the Nintendo Switch, so the end of the social app game doesn’t have to be “good bye” forever.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
