New Shenmue III Character Art, Logo, more to come at Gamescom in August

If you’re looking for a big tasty piece of new Shenmue III footage, mark your calendars for Gamescom 2017, August 22. The official site posted the update today.

“gamescom 2017 plans!

We will be attending Germany’s mid-August gaming event gamescom 2017! While we are still working out the details with our partners, we plan to show our newest movie clips, share the latest updates and even make some new announcements.”

They’ve also updated the title logo to a slicker, shiner style, after “Taking your comments into consideration,”. (The lower picture is the older logo.)

Character Art

A sneak peek of concept art showcased three characters: A young girl with a broom, and older woman with curlers, and an old man with a pipe.

The Shenmue III Kickstarter raised a whopping $6.3 million, and Sony will be helping publish the game in some form, most likely marketing and more development resources (only after confirming fans would Kickstart at least $2 million). While six million is a large number for a Kickstarter, games can easily cost significantly more. The original Shemmue was a landmark for the industry, costing between $47-$70 million to produce and market. It boasted an extremely interactive open-world for the time, with hours of voice-acting covering even the most insignificant NPCs.

On June 8th, Ys Net added a video to their Kickstarter page explaining the game would be delayed until the second half of 2018 (instead of Holiday 2017).

Yu Suzuki explained

“…By utilizing new technologies, we have been able to discover new possibilities and expressions. In many ways the game has become bigger and more beautiful than I initially expected…”

That’s all the Shenmue III news for now, but we’ll keep you posted with everything happening at Gamescom this August.

Until then, here’s a few older Shenmue III shots to remind us what we’re waiting for.

Is Shenmue serious or hilarious?

I’ve always enjoyed the games as funny B-movies. Sailors, racing forklifts, and having a better bond with a cat in a box than super hot Nozomi is how I remember this game.

Here’s a great video telling a wacky story with the best audio from the first game,

Mathew is a huge fan of Space, Strategy, and Shadowrun (Genesis version is #1). When it comes to games and films, he’d much rather experience a 10/10 classic from yesteryear than a 6/10 modern blandfest. He does feel we’re living in a gaming golden age with the power of indie developers at an all-time high, but wishes AAA publishers would take more risks. Mat believes it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings the other way and new ideas take their rightful place above reboots.
