New Prey trailer

A new Prey trailer dropped today with a special message to ‘Recycle Everthing’ in celebration of Earth Day (also today).

The trailer shows the main character indeed recycling just about everything, from random trash to an entire planet

Prey doesn’t seem to be generating much buzz, and due to the poor sales of the critically acclaimed Dishonored 2, I’m a bit worried another potentially great game could go under the radar.

Many fans of the first game were crushed when the Prey 2 original sequel was scrapped in 2014. Bethesda’s Pete Hines explained to Gamespot:

“I mean, honestly, it’s really not that complicated. It hit a point where it wasn’t shaping up to be what we wanted and there didn’t seem to be a clear path to get to where we thought it needed to be. We decided the best thing to do was just to not proceed. That’s just it.”

Many critics wondered why Arkane would title this new Bethesda-published game Prey if it wasn’t connected to the original.

Playstationlifestyle reported Raphael Colantino, Creative Director of Arkane providing this explanation:

“Well it was a matter of, first of all it’s hard to find a name for a game, and it’s a good name–sounds good. I think the association that people have about Prey is that it’s about aliens on a space station, and it’s a first-person game. When we were done with Dishonored, part of the team did Dishonored 2, and the other part [of Arkane]… we wanted to do another one of those games that we usually do, which are in first-person, with depth and simulation and narration, all that.

This time we wanted to make it on a space station, with aliens, and you had to survive with the full ecology, etc. As we started it, the name was available, and the connections were easy to be made. We just thought, ‘Okay, makes sense,’ so there we go.

[T]he high level concept is similar enough that it made sense to do that.”

Prey (2017) will feature all kinds of emergent gameplay including shape-shifting into just about anything, and the aforementioned Recycler.

Dishonored 2 was one of my favorite games of 2016 and I’m betting Arkane will knock it out of the park and into space with their upcoming release. What are your thoughts on the new Prey Trailer?

Mathew is a huge fan of Space, Strategy, and Shadowrun (Genesis version is #1). When it comes to games and films, he’d much rather experience a 10/10 classic from yesteryear than a 6/10 modern blandfest.
