Marvel’s Spider-Man Is the Japanese Game of the Year, According to Developers

Japanese developers have voted, and their Game of the Year is Marvel’s Spider-Man. This, according to the recent issue of Famitsu (via Twinfinite).

Over 100 Japanese developers and industry professionals were asked to vote on their favorite games of 2018. When the votes were all tallied, points were awarded to each game, and then each game was arranged according to the points it received. This is Japan, so of course you’re going to see series like Monster Hunter, Splatoon, and Fate/Grand Order represented, but a Western superhero took the number one spot.

If that surprises you, just wait until you see the rest of the list. There are some unbelievable games here in top spots; games we wouldn’t expect to see in a Western favorite games list, much less a Japanese list. Here’s the full rundown and rankings:

  1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  2. Monster Hunter: World
  3. Detroit: Become Human
  4. Red Dead Redemption 2
  5. God of War
  6. Octopath Traveler
  7. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  8. Fortnite
  9. Conan Exiles
  10. Splatoon 2
  11. Astro Bot: Rescue Mission
  12. Dead by Daylight
  13. Fate/Grand Order
  14. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  15. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
  16. Cities: Skylines
  17. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  18. Dragon Quest Rivals
  19. Dungeon Maker
  20. Kyoutou Kotoba RPG Kotodaman
  21. Zanki Zero: Last Beginning
  22. Super Mario Party
  23. Border Break
  24. Teku-Teku Teku-Teku
  25. NieR Automata
  26. Assassin’s Creed Origins
  27. Clash Royale
  28. Dead Cells
  29. FarCry 5
  30. Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle

How on earth did Conan Exiles beat out Splatoon 2 in Japan and make it into the top 10?! That, to us, is the biggest surprise on the list. We’re also shocked to see that Fortnite and Red Dead Redemption 2 rated so highly, especially when games like NieR Automata and Super Smash Bros. made such a big splash.

What do you think is the biggest surprise on this list? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to chime in on Facebook and Twitter!
