I think we all pretty much saw this coming, but do try to act surprised by what I’m about to say. Yesterday Yoshida Shuhei announced that The Last Guardian has been delayed yet again. “The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production,” he said in a post on the PlayStation Blog, “and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016.”
That’s not such a long delay in the grand scheme of things. After all, we have been waiting about a decade to get our hands on this game, so what’s another few weeks? From the sound of it the game is nearing completion, but is in need of a little more TLC. Yoshida went on: “A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development. To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues.
I see this as good thing and a scary thing. It’s good because, in the end, we do want to play a game that lives up to the visionary standards of its creators. This is a special project, and it needs to release only when it’s ready. It is a little scary, though. Anyone with any programming experience knows that whenever you fix one problem, the changes can cause several more problems to arise. Hopefully The Last Guardian doesn’t get stuck in limbo for another ten years.
