Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Development Discussed by Director

“There is still some way to go.”

Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Kingdom Hearts 3 for PS4 and Xbox One *side eyes Nintendo Switch* and Final Fantasy 7 Remake for PlayStation 4, outlined the games’ development in an interview with Famitsu, translated by Gematsu.

Both games are highly anticipated Square Enix titles with years of work already put into them. The remake of the 1997 Final Fantasy 7  was announced in 2015, though rumors of its existence started the year before. Kingdom Hearts 3 was unveiled years prior at E3 2013 (lots of 3’s in that sentence) with few updates since.

Director Nomura said both new titles “have a way to go,” but we can expect to see some more from them at events this year.

Regarding Kingdom Hearts 3, “There are still worlds untouched,” he said. “Production is progressing on unannounced worlds, in a state that we cannot show them off. In terms of the state of development, there is still some way to go.”

As for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Nomura simply stated, “We’re steadily progressing on production.” He also apologized for the long wait for his titles but promised quality games as consolation.

Though release is a ways away, Nomura said he wants to show off the progress made on KH3 and FFV Remake at an event this year. Maybe we’ll get to see some of those new Disney worlds in KH3 — ALL ABOARD THE DEATH STAR, FOLKS.

The Famitsu interviewer noted the Kingdom Hearts 15th anniversary, Final Fantasy 7 20th anniversary, and Final Fantasy 30th anniversary this year. In addition to the two new Kingdom Hearts HD games, Nomura stated Square Enix is kicking off the Kingdom Hearts orchestra world tour in 2017, as well as “exhibiting a Final Fantasy VII snow sculpture at the Sapporo Snow Festival in February.” He added, “We may be able to do something for the D23 Disney event.”

We’ll be on the lookout for more Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy news, so check back with us for the latest!

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
