Five Nights at Freddy’s 6 Cancelled, Creator Making “Something for Fun”

No one knows whether to believe the news or not, but Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon says the sixth installment in the indie horror series is cancelled. Is he serious or trolling us again?

Cawthon teased Five Nights at Freddy’s 6 over a year about as an April Fool’s joke and has been leaving clues about the game online ever since. Now, he says on Steam that the project is scrapped, citing stress from high expectations as the main reason.

Read part of Cawthon’s Steam post below.

“For the last month or so I’ve been dropping hints about a new game; and it’s true that I’d been working on one (call it FNaF 6 if you’d like.) But after forcing myself to keep working on it day after day, I realized something- I just don’t want to work on this. With each game’s release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. Each game SHOULD be better than the last! But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I’ve been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.

So, after giving this a lot of thought; I’ve decided that I’m going to stop working on it. I’m not going to reveal anything else about what the game was, and I’ve asked other people involved to never divulge anything either. It’s just not going to be talked about.”

Cawthon goes on to say he wants to develop “something for fun,” like Five Nights at Freddy’s mini game Foxy Fighters or “a pizzeria tycoon game.” The overall tone of the post seems pretty serious, but fans aren’t convinced, due to Cawthon’s past pranks, trolls, and otherwise silly, untrustworthy behavior.

After blowback from fans, Cawthon added an update to the post where he actually confirmed the project is “cancelled,” not just “on hold for now.” He adds, “No, it’s not a troll. (Would I ever troll you guys?).” Yes, you would, Scott. Yes. You. Would.

Even after the update, fans on Steam and the Five Nights at Freddy’s subreddit are extremely suspicious and disbelieving of Cawthon’s claims. Do you think his latest project is actually scrapped, or is it a troll? Let us know in the comments.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
