Far Cry 5 Has Microtransactions for Both Single-Player and Multiplayer

The highly anticipated release of Far Cry 5 is just around the corner, and publisher Ubisoft is sharing more details on the first-person shooter in the days leading up to its launch. Speaking with GameSpot, the company cleared up information on a couple of gameplay details — the hotly debated feature of microtransactions and the campaign’s requirement of an internet connection.

First up, microtransactions. Far Cry 5 will have them, but they shouldn’t cause controversy like those in other games where they offer a competitive advantage. In Far Cry 5, microtransactions can speed up the game’s progress for you, but spending real money definitely will not be necessary. Executive producer Dan Hay emphasized how “generous” the developers have made the game. “We’ve set the game up so…nothing is locked [away],” Hay said to GameSpot. “You can go out and explore, and the game will reward you for your exploration.”

Far Cry 5‘s microtransactions will be available for single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer. Rest assured the game’s microtransactions will be for cosmetic items only, so they will not give any players advantages over others. This has been an issue in the gaming industry recently, as some games allow players to pay for better weapons and stats, giving preference to players that have more money to spend. Thankfully that will not be an issue with Far Cry 5.

As for the game’s campaign mode, Ubisoft confirmed it will be playable entirely offline, so no internet connection will be required to play the single-player story. Of course, Far Cry 5 also features co-op and online multiplayer, so you will need an internet connection to try out those features.

Far Cry 5 releases on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 27th.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
