If you’ve been in need of some new Super Mario Bros. side-scrolling platform action, you’re in luck. If you’ve been in need of some new Super Mario Bros. side-scrolling platform action and are also not looking to spend any money, you’ve hit the jackpot. Fans have created a mod of Super Mario Bros. DS packed with 80 brand new levels, and it’s completely free to play. Check out the official trailer above.
The mod, called Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, improves upon a handheld classic by sprucing up the original game’s graphics, adding a new soundtrack, bringing back an old power-up, and giving players 80 new levels across 8 worlds. The returning power-up is none other than the Hammer Suit, which turns Mario into a hammer-throwing maniac with a fireproof shell when ducking.
Although Newer Super Mario Bros. DS is a mod of a Nintendo DS title, the game is playable only on PC and Mac. It’s completely free to download, and you can do so here. After the downloads are complete, open the setup document and follow the instructions. Installation is pretty simple, so you’ll be platforming to your heart’s content in no time.
Newer Super Mario Bros. DS was made using the New Super Mario Bros. Editor. It comes from The Red Hat Café, the same team behind Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, which came out a few years back. The new mod is a rework of Super Mario Bros. DS, which released in 2006 and sits pretty as the ninth highest selling video game ever.
In addition to downloading the mod, you can find other resources on the Newer Super Mario Bros. DS website, including a download for the game’s soundtrack and information on making your own New Super Mario Bros. levels.
