Edit levels & use the Odyssey hat trick in Super Mario 64 with these mods

It’s rare to see news about games from the ’90’s, but when mods as cool as these pop up, they’re hard not to write about. One modder has added some crazy fun features to Super Mario 64, including a level editor and the magic hat from the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey.

First up, the level editor. Kaze Emanuar has created Super Mario 64 Maker, a ROM hack via which players can create and edit custom levels in Super Mario 64 using all of the assets and AI from the 1997 classic. The above video shows Kaze creating a level from scratch by placing foundation blocks, enemies, power-ups, and — of course — kaizo blocks.

More information on Super Mario 64 Maker, including where to submit your custom levels, can be found in the video’s description box on YouTube.

Kaze also took the hat-possession feature from Super Mario Odyssey — coming this fall — and modded it into Super Mario 64.  In Odyssey, Mario can toss his hat onto both living creatures and inanimate objects to “possess” them and use their abilities.

The above video shows off Kaze’s work on the mod as Mario possesses various enemies and objects through the Super Mario 64 level. Again, more information on the mod, like how to install it, is in the YouTube video’s description box.

Both of these mods feature some level of risk, as does all user-created content, so proceed with caution. Also, both mods require an emulator to install and an N64 controller to play.

Kaze has not received take-down notices from Nintendo at the time of writing, but the big N hasn’t been shy about taking legal action against fan-made games and mods recently. These ROM hacks might get flagged by Nintendo, but there are literally hundreds of Super Mario 64 mods operating right now, so who knows.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
