Biggest News from Today’s Nintendo Direct: Pikmin, Splatoon 2, Minecraft, Switch Accessories, & More

Nintendo streamed a live Nintendo Direct today at 6:00 P.M. EST, and we’re here to give you the biggest news from the presentation. Both 3DS and Switch titles were announced and discussed. Let’s dive in.

Nintendo 3DS

Pikmin 3DS gets a name: Hey! Pikmin, a platformer where you play as, of course, Captain Olimar collecting food and treasures from a strange, colorful world with strange, colorful Pikmin. It’s set to release July 28th and will include amiibo functionality.

The mystical desert-based RPG Ever Oasis gets a release date of June 23rd.

In Monster Hunter Stories, players can ride and bond with monsters, who help you blast into new areas of the map. The game features turn-based battles and launches Fall 2017.

Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Spectors is the definitive version of the game, including a new resort area and an expanded multiplayer action mode. It hits shelves Fall 2017.

The 3DS is getting three new Kirby games in celebration of the series’ 25th anniversary. Look out for Team Kirby Clash Deluxe on the Nintendo eShop today, as well as Kirby’s Blowout Blast this summer. A multiplayer action Kirby is coming Holiday 2017.

Other 3DS games announced include Culdcept Revolt (August 29th), RPG Maker Fes (June 27th), Miitopia (June 27th), and Bye-Bye Box Boy (Available now).

Nintendo Switch

Arms

More details were released about Nintendo’s new IP Arms, which pits players against each other in a boxing ring with special, extendable arms.

Different types of arms have different abilities, including elemental attributes that are used once your arm is charged. Attributes include fire, electric, ice, explosion, stun, blind, and wind types.

Earn in-game currency and punch reward boxes in fights to get new arms. All fighters can use all arms, and fighter abilities can combine with arms’ abilities for unique attack experiences.

A new fighter Minmin was revealed. She fights with noodles and martial arts, and her left arm can transform into dragon when charged. Also, she can kick away attacks while jump-dodging. There will also be a 2 v 2 battle mode.

Arms launches June 16th.

Splatoon 2

A new gameplay mode called Salmon Run was revealed. In this mode, Inklings wear rubber overalls on a manmade garbage island and are tasked with harvesting Golden Eggs.

While collecting these Eggs, Inklings must also fight against waves of Chum, as well as bigger bosses that require various tactics.

In Salmon Run, fallen Inklings will deploy lifesavers to call for help. Shoot ink at an ally’s lifesaver to revive them.

New Splatoon amiibos include Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Squid. Scan in amiibos and save them in favorite outfits to quickly dress your characters. Amiibos from both the first game and the sequel can be scanned in and give you special gear.

Splatoon 2 and its amiibos will release July 21st.

Minecraft

Minecraft is 100% confirmed coming to the Switch and will include a Super Mario Mashup Pack. This version will allow for online multiplayer of up to 8 people, as well as up to 4 players locally. It releases May 11th on the eShop and will come to stores at a later date.

Sonic

Speedy 3D adventure Sonic Forces hits the Switch Holiday 2017, while the 2D sidescroller Sonic Mania launches this summer.

NAMCO Museum

Play classic NAMCO games, such as PacMan, Galaga, and SplatterHouse this summer on the Nintendo eShop.

Switch Accessories

A neon yellow Joy-Con and Joy-Con wrist attachment launch with Arms on June 16th.

A standalone Switch dock will be available to purchase for $59.99. Limited quanities will go on sale May 19th.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
