The seven day-long speedrun marathon Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 has closed out its fifth day of scheduled fun, offering some supremely speedy entertainment for viewers to soak up. The day started with a couple of standard speedruns before descending into the extremely silly territory of the “Awful Games” block, which highlights speedruns of terrible, glitchy games. A hefty block of Castlevania speedruns helped carry the marathon into the afternoon, along with big name games like Half-Life 2. An assortment of multi-hour speedruns closed out the event, providing a comfy way to end the evening. All in all, it was another wonderful day of speedrunning fun, all presented in an effort to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
We’ve had a great time watching the entire marathon, and day five was yet another treat in this short week of gaming festivities. To help you find some speedruns worth sitting down for, we’ve crafted this list of the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day five. Please keep in mind that we were not able to watch the full 24 hours of scheduled speedruns, so this is purely a subjective list of our favorites. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day five!
The first run of AGDQ 2022 day five was a donation bid-war between the 3DS remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, with Majora’s Mask winning by a significant margin. This prompted runner gymnast86 to pull off the highly technical “Any%” run of Majora’s Mask 3D, with a route that varies wildly from the N64 original. After speeding through the first three days of this time-bending Zelda sequel, gymnast86 performed the ultra-complex “stale reference manipulation” glitch in the Deku Palace dungeon, requiring tons of frame-perfect inputs and precise movement. This allows him to skip a huge portion of the game, teleporting all the way to the final stage. There are plenty of other cool tricks featured in this run besides the SRM glitch too, including cutscene skips, clips, and more. N64-era Zelda games are a staple of the speedrunning scene, so it’s no surprise that this Majora’s Mask 3DS run was one of the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day five.

The “Awful Games” block is a tradition at every AGDQ event, offering speedruns of exceptionally awkward and painfully poor games. As with past marathons, the awful games block was a highlight of AGDQ 2022 day five and a nice change of pace from the otherwise serious speedruns. The block of bad games started with an “Any% run of Zelda’s Adventure on the CD-i, which set the tone for the following hours. There was no shortage of quirky titles, played by equally eccentric runners who reveled in the weird and woeful realm of shovelware-quality gaming. Many of the awful block runs were also short and sweet, making them ideal picks for a quick watch if you have a busy schedule. Since the awful block is more about comedy than serious speedrunning, your mileage will vary depending on your sense of humor, but there are some great runs to choose from.

Over the past few Games Done Quick marathon events, point ‘n click adventure speedruns have popped up more, which has been an absolute delight for us. As longtime fans of this fading genre, we love to see retro point ‘n click games thrust into the spotlight, which is exactly what this run of Discworld by Mindez accomplished. Full of fun characters, bright colors, and quick puzzle-solving, this speedrun was a pleasant rebound from the awful block. It might not be as flashy or tech-heavy as a modern 3D action speedrun, but we still found ourselves enamored with this adaptation of Terry Pratchet’s fantasy books. We hope to see even more point ‘n click speedruns at the next GDQ event, because Mindez’s run of Discworld was one of the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day five!

The Castlevania block had quite a few interesting runs, including this exciting race of Castlevania: Dracula X between Crunan and SBDWolf. With Dracula X being one of the lesser-played Castlevania games, we haven’t seen many runs of it, so this race was a great introduction. In just over 15 minutes, this run offers everything great about the franchise, ranging from tight jumps and damage-boosts to boss quick-kills. While the entire Castlevania block will be a treat for fans of the franchise, the Dracula X race is a brief but satisfying dose of vampire-slaying action.

Half-Life is a defining game franchise in the speedrun community, featuring insanely fast movement tech, wild skips, and tons of challenging tricks. This “Any%, No VoidClip” run by Maltemller is a glitch-filled exhibition of Half-Life 2 and the exploits possible in the Source engine. From short bunny-hops that make Gordon Freeman go faster that a speeding bullet to quick-save strategies that confuse the game and force teleportation, there are a heap of mind-bending strategies to see. It’s hard to overstate just how fast this Half-Life 2 run is, so you’ll have to see it for yourself.

Kingdom Hearts II is a classic PS2 game that features both Disney characters and high-flying anime-style combat, making for a quirky and entertaining speedrun. However, this cooperative speedrun race of the game takes things to the next level, as it is randomized, meaning that all items, boss rewards, and level-up awards are completely random. To achieve victory, two teams of team players must search through the game’s many chests, looking for important items that will power them up to take on grander challenges. In total, there are 37 individual things that must be collected or accomplished before the run is valid, leading to a wild goose hunt across the game. Although it’s a bit of a long speedrun, this Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix race supplies plenty of great moments, including some stunning boss fights and informative commentary that greatly helps when the action gets hectic. Especially if you’re a fan of Kingdom Hearts, this co-op randomizer race was one of the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day five.

By the time day give wrapped up, AGDQ 2022 has raised over $1,350,000 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. That’s over $300,000 in one day. Generally speaking, viewers at home have been incredibly generous so far this year, out-pacing every other GDQ marathon with its charity earnings. Hopefully, this rate continues throughout the weekend, leaving AGDQ 2022 with a fat sum of charity funds.
