There are 20 Japanese Unreal Engine 4 games in development for the Switch

Around 20 Japanese video games that use Unreal Engine 4 are in development for the Nintendo Switch right now. This comes from Epic Games Japan representative Takayuki Kawasaki in a recent interview with Automaton, as translated by Gematsu.

Kawasaki mentioned there were no Unreal Engine 4 games released for the Nintendo Switch at launch. In fact, the Switch just got its first Unreal Engine game a couple weeks ago with Snake Pass from Sumo Digital.

“In Japan,” Kawasaki said, “there are about 20 titles being developed that use Unreal Engine, so I think that they’ll be announced gradually from here on.”

He clarified after another question that he was referring specifically to Nintendo Switch titles.

“We’re gradually moving forward with Switch support for the free version [of Unreal Engine 4],” Kawasaki continued. “That way, as long as you have a Switch development license, you will be able to develop for Switch even with the free version.”

The only title he mentioned by name was Shin Megami Tensei, a post-apocalyptic RPG that was revealed at the Nintendo Switch unveiling event this January. Check out the teaser trailer from the presentation below.

Other than Shin Megami Tensei, there are only two Unreal Engine 4 games confirmed for the Switch at this point: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Dragon Quest XIDragon Quest XI is technically unconfirmed, as we don’t know if it’s using the PS4 version or the 3DS version as a base.

Upcoming Japanese games like the Final Fantasy VII remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 are being developed with Unreal Engine 4, and we’re crossing our fingers they’re on the secret list of Switch titles Kawasaki discussed.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
